What is a River Barge ?

A hotel barge is essentially a floating hotel, allowing you to experience the European countryside in comfort and style. Aboard a hotel barge are nicely appointed cabins with private bathrooms and showers, a nice salon with library and bar, dining area, and sundeck perfect for watching the passing scenery. Daily guided excursions are planned to local areas of interest. Meals are prepared onboard from the finest fresh local ingredients and complimented with fine area wines. Barging is a relaxing and enjoyable way to see the beautiful countryside of Europe .

About River Barge Charters

Charters are typically for 7 days and 6 nights. Prices range from $600 to $1000 per person per day depending on the comfort level and amenities of the vessel. The most popular charters are in France although we offer hotel barges in Ireland , England , Scotland , The Netherlands, Germany and Italy .

Advantages of a river barge vacation:

  • Relaxed Pace - Barges travel at about 4 miles per hour, our clients find this to be very relaxing and soothing
  • Culture - River Barges allow you to see a country from the inside, to get up close and personal to the locals.
  • Service - A typical hotel barge will have 5 crew members to serve you, with a strong emphasis on your culinary experience.
  • Excursions - In minutes you are on land where you can go cycling, ride in a hot air balloon, sample local wines, play golf or visit an ancient castle
  • Value - A barge vacation in Europe is typically better value than a yacht charter. The charter price for a hotel barge is truly all-inclusive as each barge has its own van that accompanies the vessel and takes the client on escorted tours. Food, fine wines, excursions, fuel, docking fees and taxes are all included in the price.

Disadvantages of a river barge vacation:

  • Pace - some can find the slow moving pace to be too slow.
  • Inflexible - River barge itineraries are fairly rigid and there is little possibility of going off on an ad hoc adventure. Although within the parameters of the itinerary, the captain will stop and start on your wishes.
  • Weather - European weather is a little more unpredictable and can be a little cool during the shoulder months. On the plus side, no hurricanes!
